Heritage gardening skills
Thursday 4 September
10am to 1pm
Location: Stockwood Discovery Centre, Luton
Training fruit trees into espaliers is a traditional way to grow fruit in small spaces. This workshop, led by Konni Deppe, the community gardener in residence at Stockwood, is an introduction to:
basic theory of (fruit) tree growth
which tools to use and how to keep them clean and sharp
when and how to prune
how to consider the tree-health holistically
During the practical part, you will get hands on and practice your skills on the beautiful apple espaliers and cordons in the historical garden at Stockwood. All tools provided, but please bring pruning gloves if you can (although we have spare). You’re welcome to bring your own secateurs and pruning saws if you prefer. Please bring a mid-morning snack and drinks. Wear sturdy shoes and clothing suitable for the weather, including a hat if it’s sunny.
